IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

For centuries, the eggplant has occupied a strange place in history. In medieval Europe, it was known as the “Mad Apple,” with some believing it could induce insanity because of its relation to the nightshade family. Once surrounded by superstition and cultural prejudice, it eventually became a staple of Mediterranean cuisine and a recurring symbol in folklore, medicine, and ritual.

Today, the eggplant has taken on yet another identity. Thanks to the internet, a fruit once feared has become one of the world’s most recognizable emojis—a symbol that has drifted far beyond food into humor, innuendo, and popular culture.

Immaculate Conception invites each participating artist to respond to this unlikely subject in their own way. The resulting works move between the sacred and the absurd, history and contemporary culture, with references ranging from folklore and religion—including Eggplant Jesus—to satire, identity, and personal narrative. United by a single prompt, the exhibition reveals how one ordinary object can produce an extraordinary range of ideas.

BETWEEN LANDS by PHIA

BETWEEN LANDS by PHIA

Between Lands is a new body of work by Phia Dubuisson exploring the relationship between heritage, identity, and transformation. Through expressive portraiture, layered texture, and symbolic form, the work reflects on the spaces we occupy between memory and change — where culture is not only preserved, but continuously reshaped through lived experience. Each piece carries a sense of personal reflection while speaking to broader ideas of belonging, migration, and becoming.

Balancing softness with emotional intensity, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how identity evolves across generations, environments, and experiences. Rather than presenting culture as fixed, Between Lands embraces it as something fluid — carried forward through adaptation, resilience, and human connection. The result is a collection that feels both intimate and universal, grounded in history.

SCAPES by Adam O'Day

SCAPES by Adam O'Day

SCAPES brings together a decade of work from Adam O’Day’s critically acclaimed series (2015–2025), a body of paintings that explores the emotional architecture of place.

This exhibition focuses exclusively on cityscapes—specifically Boston—rendered in O’Day’s signature saturated, expressive style. In 2015, O’Day won Boston’s Portrait of a City contest, a milestone that solidified his relationship with the city not just as subject, but as collaborator. Since 2010, he has contributed to over 150 art shows, building a reputation for work that is both deeply personal and unmistakably urban.

The paintings in SCAPES are not literal representations of streets and skylines. They are psychological landscapes—compressed, heightened, and alive with color. O’Day amplifies Boston’s familiar corners into something cinematic and almost electric, using bold saturation and gestural mark-making to translate atmosphere into emotion. Buildings bend, light blooms, and the city feels both recognizable and dreamlike. Boston, in this series, becomes a living organism: layered with memory, movement, and time. These works reflect a decade of walking its streets, observing its shifts, and distilling its spirit onto canvas.

SCAPES is a celebration of place—of the beauty in density, the poetry in pavement, and the way a city can shape the artist as much as the artist reshapes the city.

NUDES vol. ii

NUDES vol. ii

NUDES Vol. II brings together a group of artists working with the figurative nude to explore the body as something complicated, political, intimate, awkward, powerful, and—yes—sometimes hot. Stripped of costume and pretense, these works treat the body not as an ideal to aspire to or a problem to explain, but as a lived-in reality full of contradictions: desire and discomfort, confidence and insecurity, humor and vulnerability.

In a culture that still manages to be unsettled by nudity while being saturated with it, this exhibition invites viewers to slow down, look closer, and notice what comes up—attraction, confusion, curiosity, resistance. You don’t have to like every piece, but if it makes you feel something, it’s doing its job.

PURRR Vol. 2.

PURRR Vol. 2.

Last year’s PURRR proved one thing beyond debate: cats and art share the same attitude problem. It was loud, chaotic, and gloriously successful — a full-on cultural hairball (in the best possible way). Now, PURRR Vol. 2 prowls back into Black Walls Gallery, bigger, bolder, and slightly more house-trained.

This annual exhibition celebrates the majestic absurdity of feline energy — equal parts grace, mischief, and existential indifference. Featuring a lineup of artists unafraid to scratch the furniture of convention, PURRR Vol. 2 explores what happens when curiosity doesn’t kill the cat, but hands it a paintbrush instead. Expect claws, color, and a creative purrr that might just shake the walls.

EARTH ROCKER by Dave Tree

Dave TREE makes art because he has to make art. The need to be creative and to communicate with art is a driving need for most artists. While many artists will make “art” as a means for riches and fame, Dave TREE makes art for positive change. His art has purpose. Art can be aestict pleasing but empty of meaning. Dave TREE creates art that has meaning, because if the art has no meaning, then the art is meaningless. Time and talent should never be wasted on ego, when the world needs true art with meaning and purpose to inspire us as a species to evolve to a higher level of existence.

A note from Glitch Collective:

“Our first and exciting venture into event curation. By showcasing in the Black Walls Gallery inside of the East Coast’s first Cannabis Mall, New Día, we share their unique mission of offering a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors through amplifying the voices of those who belong to our community. By revolutionizing traditional perceptions of craft-work and bringing them into an alternative space, Glitch aims to showcase and inform the larger community about these contemporary craft projects.
Run by soon to be graduates of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, we (Jinju Santalucia, Abby Frank, Catherine DiLeo, and Mia Rose) all share a passion for bringing people together in a space where artists can thrive. As Glitch collective, we aim to not only host an alternative art show, but to serve as amplifiers for voices in the community we are a part of while hosting in a safe space where people can gather, learn, share, and connect.

All the Silver and Gold

All the Silver and Gold

In the thick of the global pandemic of 2020-a time of collective heartbreak, isolation, and profound uncertainty-a creative spark found its way into an unexpected space. A 2,000 sq. ft. studio, generously provided by a local brewery, became both a sanctuary and a laboratory for massive, experimental expression. What began as a solitary exploration by Adam O’Day quickly evolved into a collaborative force when friends Pete Cosmos, Merk, and Ivonne Blanco joined in. Together, the four of us created over a dozen large-scale works that became vessels for processing grief, joy, anxiety, and hope.

Fueled by the rhythmic pulse of Nigerian Funky Disco, particularly the transcendent sounds of William Onyeabor’s Good Name-with its haunting lyric, “silver and gold”-our sessions were part therapy, part celebration. These paintings are layered with the chaos and calm we all felt: fractured figures, vivid collisions of color, random symbolism, and collaged moments that echo the fragmented nature of memory and emotion during a global crisis.

Back then, only about twenty people saw these works in person, with the pandemic limiting access to those who reserved private viewings. Now, five years later, Black Walls Gallery offers us the chance to open this moment in time to a broader audience.

All the Silver and Gold is more than a collection of paintings-it’s a time capsule of resilience, collaboration, and the healing power of art and music. We invite you to step into that moment with us, to find your own reflections within the chaos and color, and maybe, to dance a little on your way out.
